2017 began in the spirit of partnership for the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), officially becoming a Friend of the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA).
Working to promote action to build resilient and sustainable island communities, GLISPA is a partnership aiming to inspire leadership, catalyse commitments and facilitate collaboration for all islands.
The work of GLISPA helps to implement Programme of Work on Island Biodiversity under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Ecosystem and Biodiversity Protection is one of the core priorities and focusses of SPREP that works to help achieve a resilient Pacific environment sustaining our livelihoods and natural heritage in harmony with our cultures.
Pacific island delegates with SPREP at a special GLISPA high-level event celebrating ten years of leadership,
at the CBD COP13 in Cancun, Mexico.
"We are very pleased to be part of this international movement that unites all islands across the globe to work together to help build resilient and sustainable island communities," said Mr Kosi Latu, Director General of SPREP.
"This is a great start to 2017 for us and we look forward to the outcomes of this partnership that can help further benefit our island members, several of whom already have strong working relationships with GLISPA."
The Global Island Partnership is led by the Presidents of Palau and Seychelles as well as the Prime Minister of Grenada. The GLISPA strategy is guided by the Steering Committee of political leaders to mobilise action.
